Honda CB550 Update

Last weekend we got the lower case back together. Progress came to a halt once I realized I needed the piston clips before we could move on.

Here is a picture of the progress.

Hoping to get the wheels painted this weekend but that might not happen since the weather is calling to be in the 50's and I will probably be out riding rather than fixing.

Loose Panniers? Gorilla Tape!

My panniers have been loose for the past year or so.

Today I decided I was going to tackle this problem.

My first thought was that the pucks that hold the box onto the rack were wearing out. I had a pretty simple answer for this problem, sand down the base of the puck so the puck tab exerts more pressure against the rack.

I first measured the thickness between the old one and a new one.

I learned that the old one is .01 thicker than the new one.So that obviously isn't the problem and left me back at figuring it out. I text my new found information off to Isaiah to let him know and he reply's back that he bought some Gorilla tape and was going to put it on the back of his boxes to see if that makes the difference.

I grabbed a roll of generic silver duct tape and applied it to my rack to give this a try.

I put the box back on and it was solid, like brand new solid. The tape took up enough room to lock the box on tight.

Off to the store I went to get some real tape that will hopefully hold up for a while.

It took me forever to find the Gorilla tape at the store and while I was looking I came across this stuff.

I think it would work really well and it isn't a sand texture but more of a hard rubber. The store I was at only sold it by the foot and I wasn't sure how much I needed so I left it be and went with the Gorilla tape.

When I got back home I pulled a box off and you can see where the paint is wore off of it. Being that it is a powder coat on the box and rack, which is a very thick, wearing off I can see why the boxes are coming loose.

I washed the box up with some glass cleaner.

Grabbed the Gorilla tape

And applied it around the box like so.

I put the box back on the bike, the conclusion? The tightest box I've had in over a year. I can't get it to budge at all with the tape on there. Will it hold up? I will find out in the future, hopefully the near future.

I've had a pretty boring day today as it is raining outside and I have been just bumming around the house so I actually made a whole instructional video of how to apply tape to a pannier... yes, I realized how stupid it is to have a entire 10 minute video dedicated to applying tape to a box. That is why the entire video isn't on here, but I thought I'd at least give you a taste of what you are missing in a video all about applying tape.

March Ride

A whopping 40 degrees outside today got me out on the bike and got my March ride in. Went about 20 miles absolutely nowhere special.

I like this picture because it has the bike with the ice fisherman drilling a hole. I just wish I would have had my better camera with rather than just my cell phone.

80 miles for the year so far. I hope to get out a ton more in March.

76 Days to the T.W.A.T.

76 days till the Friday before Memorial Day Weekend. We are going to do a proper Trans Wisconsin Adventure Trail ride from the beginning to the end. What does that consist of?

At least the last time I was on it that is what it looked like. We did this in 2011 but didn't have the time or knowledge to do the entire thing. Here is a link: 2011 TWAT

Now we're a bit older, wiser, and have a bit more time. We are leaving either Thursday afternoon or Friday morning for the ride to the Illinois border which is about three hours away. We have till Monday night to get home.

GPS Mount

I finally came up with a use for the dashboard that came with my with my windscreen system. I used velcro to mount my GPS to it.

I'm going to run the charging cord a bit different but this shows the set up.

Now I am sure you are wondering why I need two GPS systems on one bike. Well I don't but I will say that the Nuvi is much easier to throw an address into and go where the 60CSx isn't. But with the 60CSx I can create my own routes including trails on Mapsource and upload it on to the 60CSx where with the Nuvi I can't. So I don't need both but since I already have both of them, I might as well use them.

Lift Table

I put a new wheel chock on the front of my table lift today. I will say it is a heck of a lot better than the stock one but it still doesn't hold the bike up stable by itself, I strap it down for the extra security. I think if it was a wider tire it would be more stable but it is good enough to hold the bike up till I can get a strap on it.

Now I just need to come up with a better way to center lift the bike while it is on the table.
